Did You Know Compression Stockings Are Great For Everyone?
Compression stockings are often assumed to be for little old ladies who want to avoid varicose veins and swelling on their legs and feet.
WRONG! Today there are socks, stockings, hose, and sleeves designed to combat everything from varicose veins to plantar fasciitis.
Compression wear provides support by applying graduated pressure highest at the ankle and decreasing up the lower leg. This pressure causes surface veins to narrow which increases arterial pressure.
Compression socks were first invented by mechanical engineer Conrad Jobst in the 1950’s when he noticed his legs felt better when he was swimming. He proceeded to develop an elastic stocking to simulate the hydrostatic pressure in the pool, and thanks to development in elastic fibres there are many varieties of compression hosiery today.
When compression wear is fitted properly, it is useful for many different people: athletes, expecting mothers, anyone sitting or standing for long periods of time at work or while traveling, people suffering from plantar fasciitis, and people with swollen and achy feet. Compression socks, and sleeves provide reduced pain and swelling, increased blood return to heart, decreased recovery time following exercise, and prevention or varicose and spider veins.
There are varying levels of compression available and it’s important to know which compression level is correct for you. Leduc Physio does custom fittings for compression socks, stockings, pantyhose, and sleeves!
New to our clinic: Orthosleeve FS6; a compression sleeve specially designed to relieve pain from plantar fasciitis.
